I think some audience members may find these pieces polarizing, in that you’ll either love the cross-section portrayed, or be repulsed by it, but contextually they all punctuate moments in time about lonely souls desperately just wanting to connect. Hendricks has, knowingly I believe, captured this odd cycle of the rise of technology impairing face-to-face social skills, but then empowering these awkward attempts to connect by providing a nameless and faceless venue. It’s a seedy underbelly, and one of them most robust exercises I’ve seen in revealing the strange dichotomy of our Modern Age. Grade A-.

I was pleased to see Hendricks use heavier paper stock for a better designed cover, and a couple of pull quotes on the back, upping his game with nice small moves. It’s refreshing to see someone just get it, with discernible actions toward improvement…some of these are so odd that you just can’t make this stuff up. For some reason, I enjoyed the post about someone wanting another party to come and kill a spider for them at 1am. Not only does the post get an actual reply, but it’s an alternative solution that seems to shake up the worldview of the original poster. Grade A.

This isn’t autobiographical, more biographical I suppose, but like good autobio comics, the observations catalogued here provide commentary about daily life, which illuminates the universal human condition, ideally causing us to consider our own actions in introspective fashion. Stranger Two Stranger is well-drawn, and an old-school, made-it-at-Kinko’s, honest-to-goodness, hand-stapled, DIY mini-comic. It’s a fun first effort that succeeds. Grade A-.

I’m so happy that Robert decided to keep going with this. Sure, it’s a simple concept: illustrating the best/oddest Craigslist personal ads, which he started doing after being inspired by the “I Saw You…” anthology edited by Julia Wertz (which I’ve been meaning to review for ages now). Still, the guy has the judgement needed to pick out some of the best ads, which goes a long way in a book like this.

Well, somehow I missed this review of my comic by Randy Spaghetti way back in August but he had some kind words to say:

I love the simplicity of the concept for this zine: find weird Craigslist personal ads and illustrate them. Brilliant. This is the kind of zine that could potentially stick around for a long time, and hopefully it will. Funny drawings connected to weird personal adds never gets old. Great zine.

Posted above is another page from Stranger Two Stranger Volume 1. I still have copies available if you feel like picking one up. And I am working on Volume 2! It has taken me a bit longer than I had hoped…but I think I am about halfway done, and hope to finish it before the end of the year for sure. I am concentrating more on single panels like the one above for the next volume. Stay tuned!
